What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?
Search engine optimization, or SEO, is a methodology of tactics, strategies and techniques used to improve the visibility of a website in search engines via the algorithmic or organic search results. Generally, the higher and more frequently a website appears in the search engine results, the more visitors it is likely to receive.
How DNN Can Improve Your Website SEO?
Did you know that the DotNetNuke framework has various characteristics that can help with SEO and optimize your website for enhanced visibility? Here are two effective ways it can improve your website SEO:
URL Structure
The link text is what the end-users see and the link URL is what they follow. However, sometimes the link URL and link text are the same because of automated software and, not to mention, the ubiquity of copy-and-paste. While it’s beneficial for your page to be associated with a keyword or phrase, it also pays off when a visitor links directly to your page using the link text.
Additionally, since search engines prefer a unique URL linking to a unique piece of content, you can only use on URL per page. If more than one URL is used for a piece of content, the search engines consider this duplicate content - a page with duplicate content issues never ranks as well than a page that does not!
Fortunately, DNN eliminates duplicate content automatically as the system is aware of the correct URL, and will redirect visitors trying to reach the site with another URL to the correct one. Here’s how you can do this:
Once you have logged in as an administrator, navigate to the page where you want to set the URL
Go into the Page Settings using the ‘Edit Page’ dropdown
Type in the URL of your choice in the Page URL field
Click ‘Update’.
H Tags
Since DNN doesn’t enforce using any particular H tag, you have the freedom to edit one into your content the way you like. You can also define a custom DNN skin for your site, which shows a H1 for a specific page value.
It’s recommended that you leave any H tags out of your skin and define a H1 tag for each piece of content (like the blog post title). Although others may be content with defining a H1 tag using the page name of each page, customizing each piece of content ensures maximum impact. It does, however, take a lot of time!
If you want to make a ‘H1’ in DNN, here’s how you can do it:
In the ‘Edit Page’ dropdown, click on the ‘Edit this Page’ button to enter edit mode for a particular page.
1. Click on ‘Edit Content’ by hovering over the ‘Pencil’ edit icon
2. Select an existing header or type in your header
3. Select ‘Heading 1’ using the style drop down.
To confirm the HTML is correct, you can switch to the ‘Html’ view from the HTML editor.
